The Nest is a shelter situated in the Point area of Durban, South African. For about R30, a person will be able to spend the night, take a shower and have a hot meal. Quite a few inhabitants spend the entire day begging just to make enough money for the shelter.

Soswa – Director of The Nest

Soswa is currently the Director of The Nest. He once used The Nest as his home when he was shelterless.

I am Thomas Amani Soswa, originally from Kenya.

I am a people’s person, humble, respect everybody regardless of who they are. Few years back I had a dream about a family which was hungry and desperate for help. This dream stayed on my mind and I was wondering how I could help that family and was wondering what was the meaning of the dream.

One day while I was looking for job, I happened to be exhausted, lonely, and desperate and did not know where to go. So I walked allover in town and found myself in the nest where I got a job as a cleaner.

I dedicated myself to my job and I worked very hard until one particular day the owner decided to liquidate the business because he found it very hard in term of finances. I was willing to help people because they were nowhere to go when the place close down.

I remember going to different companies and churches for help, I even went to newspapers but there was no response and I kept on waiting in vain until. Then came the moment when the landlord wanted the rent, I took every cent I had on my account but it was not enough for the rent.

But because I had courage, I convinced the landlord to wait for me while I asked people to contribute and they did so. I paid the rent and people stayed inside and I started running the nest since then, it became my first priority and my family as well.

As I was helping people out of nothing I knew God gave provided me with that opportunity, then I came to realize that the dream I had was coming true, therefore I was ready to pursue it. And I’ve learnt how important people are by helping them.

I love working with people and it is like a challenge to me everyday. I’ve been the owner since then and though without any financial help, I survive.

It is not easy but I gave my all to the nest and I will continue helping people.
